Letters Home
Written & Edited by Bill Norton
A few years ago, Grandma Norton brought to Arizona an envelope containing forty-six pages of letters written by James Stewart Norton during his service in the Central American Mission. These letters, now scanned and preserved, are a priceless treasure.
“Letters Home” offers a rare glimpse into a pivotal period in James Stewart Norton’s life. Most of his letters, documents, and photos from this time were lost when boxes he had stored in a friend’s shed were mistakenly discarded. These surviving letters capture a time when Norton was happy, motivated, and dedicated to spreading the Gospel in Central America. They reflect his strong testimony, commitment to family, and deep love for his faith.
Despite the challenges he faced and the pain he caused to some, Norton’s introduction of the Gospel has had lasting positive impacts. These letters document a period of joy and righteousness, showing him as a man of faith during his mission. However, Norton’s life was not without shadows; he often struggled with his past and made decisions that caused tremendous harm to his family and others.
“Letters Home” is a testament to the enduring power of faith, family, and dedication, offering readers a heartfelt and complex look at a man who, despite his struggles and wrongdoings, managed to pass on the blessings of the Gospel to his posterity, leaving a legacy of spiritual strength and resilience. This collection provides invaluable insights into a time when Norton lifted the shadows with the light of truth and righteousness, marking a profound period in his life.
