Constitution Week USA

Constitution Week USA, co-founded by Bill Norton and Barb Stowell, was a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting constitutional education and civic engagement. The initiative began in 2002 after John Lewis, a church leader who later became the mayor of Gilbert, Arizona, asked Bill and Barb to organize a celebration for Constitution Week. The first event included a memorial for the September 11 attacks, a Constitution Week Fair, a Tribute to the Founders event, and a Family Lesson.

From its humble beginnings, Constitution Week USA grew into the largest Constitution Week celebration in the country, operating until 2014. Each year, volunteers dressed up as founding fathers and mothers, such as Abigail Adams and George Washington, visiting every elementary classroom in Gilbert Public Schools to teach about the Constitution and promote Constitution Week events. This initiative reached over 28,000 students annually. The Constitution Fair, a key highlight of the week, drew 8,000 to 10,000 attendees, featuring notable performances by artists like Lee Greenwood and David Archuleta, and events such as a naturalization ceremony officiated by Sandra Day O’Connor. These events aimed to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Constitution, drawing significant participation from the community and spotlighting the importance of the US Constitution.
